President's Message
-------------------
Dear Internauts:
First, let me acknowledge that I first heard the term "Internaut" at the
SecondConference on Computers, Freedom and Privacy, March 18-20, 1992. This
expression was offered in a talk by Jean Armour Polly who works at the
Liverpool, New York public library. It is a story in itself that this library
is on the Internet through PSI.
The Board of Trustees of the Internet Society held formal election of officers
by email with the following results:
President, Vinton Cerf
Vice President for Conferences, Lawrence Landweber
Vice President for Publications, Anthony M. Rutkowski
Treasurer, Frode Greisen
Secretary, Juergen Harms
The Board also approved the appointment of Michael Roberts as Executive
Director of the Society. He will continue to split his time between EDUCOM and
the Internet Society.
Individual memberships are approximately at the 1,000 mark and organizational
sponsors number an even dozen with another dozen committed and may more giving
consideration to this distinction. If you think your organizations might want
to provide this kind of support for the Society, please don't hesitate to get
in touch with the Internet Society secretariat (isoc@nri.reston.va.us) or with
me personally.
In addition to the INET92 Conference planned for June 16-19 this year in Kobe,
Japan, planning has begun on the INET93 conference in San Francisco. Eric
Benhamou, the CEO of 3COM Corporation, has accepted appointment as the general
chairman. A conference planning committee consisting of Eric Benhamou, Michael
Carter (Apple), David Brandin (Interop), Dan Lynch (Interop), Bob Shahan (IBM),
Michael Majdalany (SUN) and Lee Caldwell (Novell) is working with Larry
Landweber, Mike Roberts, Elizabeth Barnhart and me to organize the 1993
conference. Organizations interested in sponsoring this activity are invited to
contact Larry Landweber (lhl@cs.wisc.edu).
